Fat be gone...

After some confusion over whether our treadmill was fit for use (turns out we were just being paranoid and the funny noises have stopped), I worked out for the first time in my garage last night.

I know that some people find weight loss blogs boring, but I blog about all sorts of things, my weight loss goals being one of them. I also think that I'll be more accountable if I track my progress on here.

I have decided that rather than sticking exactly to the C25K program, I will do 5km every day, but will try to better the time each day. I have figured out that if I can shave 20 seconds off the time each time I work out, then it should be about 4 - 6 weeks until I am running 5km in 30 minutes, give or take a few days as I'm sure I won't work out EVERY SINGLE DAY and it may become more difficult to shave off time as the weeks go on.

So - last night I walked/ran (let's be honest, I mostly walked) 5km in 43:53:

I think the 13 means I ran 13 laps...

That works out to an average of 6.9km/hr. When I'm running the whole way in 30 minutes I'll have to stay at a steady 10km/hr which will be fun. I went for almost a minute at 14km last night which was an experience. I was actually feeling really good - the 400m was my best event when I was doing athletics back at school - but then when I slowed down to a walk again boy did I feel sick.

I wish I would burn more than 259 calories in that workout, but I don't want to push it. I'm feeling a bit stiff and sore today, but not enough to stop me from going again this evening before heading out for dinner with a friend (if that goes ahead).

I found that listening to my iPod made it really fun. I am going to arrange a playlist today of upbeat music, as sometimes good old Air Supply's "I'm All Outta Love" just doesn't motivate enough...

I hope everyone else who is working towards a fitness or weight loss goal is going well. Thanks again to Jane and her twitter pals for the inspiration!

That is just what I needed to read. That is what I want to do. I will do it with you. 2 years ago I did exactly the same thing and could run 5K. It was great. Now I'm a slug. V.bad!! How many times a week are you running - and yes Jane & her twitter pals inspired me too! How funny. Thank you thank you. xxxxx

Ooh I'm pleased I have a buddy for this little program!

At this stage I plan to run probably 5 times a week, but more if I feel up to it or less if my body is telling me I need a break.

Looking forward to hearing about your progress :)

Thanks Kelly :) I make sure to stretch a bit before and after (thought probably not as much as I should) and I always walk for a few minutes before really getting into it, just to loosen the old body up.

If you were to blog about your weight loss I'd love to read it - always interesting to read blogs that you relate to...

I've been trying to do treadmill goals too...I have one of those hi-tech treadmills but I just lack motivation and correct gear (aka a good sports bra!!) ... I do find that making a playlist of running music makes all the difference!

Or if you like to power walk, Enrique Iglesias's "I Like it' is THE perfect song haha

YAY!!!! I'm so glad the treadmill noises have stopped. And I like your goal to do 5km every day and try to do it faster and faster. I think I'm doing pretty much the same thing... rather than doing the run/walk thing, I just see how fast I can do 5km. I still havent beat my time on day 1 of 28.32, but I WILL GET THERE, DAMMIT.

The calorie counters on treadmills vary so much, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to yours if you can help it. I know if I'd been working out for 43 minutes on my treadmill, my calorie thing would say 400 calories. It's giving me false hope, so I cover it with a towel and try not to look at it!

I'm so excited that there are heaps of us doing this together. Makes it so much easier and even enjoyable! Keep up the great work x

Jane - 400 calories sounds about right for the amount that you run. Because I walk so much it's reading lower. I have to enter in my weight, gender, etc. in so I think the calorie counter is probably slightly more accurate than the one at the gym where I don't enter in any details. We'll see though! I figure no matter how many calories I'm burning, it's all positive...

I can't believe on your first day you ran 5km so quickly! You're one fit girl! You must have run almost all of it, or if not when you did run it must have been pretty fast!

You're making me want a tread mill really bad! I watched a showed once, I think it was 'What's good for you', and they demonstrated how most of the calories are burnt in the 24 hours following your work out, so you wouldn't have only burnt those ones ;) x

Nat - I love love love you for telling me that.

Got to tell you, so far the treadmill is super convenient... Also I burn really easily and try to stay out of the sun, so exercising indoors is so much better for my skin.
